From behind the SUV, I peeked at the front door. A breeze kicked up and I saw the front door move. Just a little like it was ajar and moved by the wind.
I looked around me to make sure there wasn't anyone out there with me that I missed. I crept back up between the garage and SUV while double-checking the vehicle for any occupants. But the windows were heavily tinted and I really couldn't see anything without turning on my flashlight, which I didn't want to do. From inside the garage, I heard something moving around. I reached for my gun but then let it go.
I guess I was a little spooked being back on nights. So far I really didn't have anything. We had a 911 hang up with no sounds of a disturbance or anyone in distress. I had a noise in the garage that could have been anything including the homeowner. I walked to the side of the house and peeked in a window. It was a bedroom that appeared in perfect order. The bed was made and everything. Hell, I wanted to break the window, climb in and sleep in the bed myself.
The hell with this, I thought. I walked around to the front door and intentionally knocked with enough force to open the door all the way.
"Hello! Cypress City Police!" That was all I said before I saw the legs.

I stumbled on this short story after reading a number of bonobo-related books. Main character is a cop who responds to a 911 call and finds an old schoolmate, her dead husband and a bonobo in a cage in the garage. The bonobo is a reject of government experimentation and has learned to communicate using an Ipad app. What follows is the usual cop-crime stuff with some lusting after the old schoolmate. The writing is OK, the formating on kindle has a few issues and a few punctuation issues and misspellings are irksome. I finished the story quickly and probably won't read it again....I have a 'meh' response to the whole thing. Half of the download is a sample for Megalodon Lives, another story by the same author.Product details

I read this story in about an hour. It was interesting and I enjoyed it. If you like cop stories this is a good one.
